STENTOR STUDENT I VIO LINS AND VIOLAS 3 ‘Stentor’ is the registered trademark of STENTOR MUSIC CO. LTD. Contents copyright of STENTOR MUSIC CO. LTD Violas - Technical Information Violas  are  described  by  the  length  of  their backs,  not  by  fractional  sizes.  There  is  no absolute   standard   but   currently,   instruments used  by  adults  are  mostly  15½"  (390mm)  or 16" (405mm). Larger instruments can be found up to 17" (43cm). The smaller instruments, 15" (380mm)   or   less,   are   generally   used   by children. Over   the   last   few   years   there   has   been increased demand for smaller violas. Previously,   the   viola   was   often   taught   on violins strung up with viola strings. This is not
recommended as the true viola sound cannot be
achieved.  Children  are  now  starting  on  viola
rather  than  moving  from  the  violin  and  it  is essential  for  their  progress  that  an  authentic instrument   is   used.   Stentor   has   developed smaller size violas, down to 12" (300mm), to meet this need, offering good tone and sound as well as correctly sized instruments.   1038 'Stentor Student I' Viola Outfit Description as 1400 12", 13", 14", 15", 15½", 16" sizes Viola Stentor  instruments  are  produced  in  a  carefully supervised environment.
