- Technical InformationViolas are
described by the length of theirbacks, not by fractional sizes.
There is noabsolute standard
but currently, instrumentsused
by adults are mostly 15½" (390mm) or16" (405mm). Larger instruments can be foundup to 17" (43cm). The smaller instruments, 15"(380mm) or less, are
generally used bychildren.Over the last few
years there has beenincreased demand
for smaller
violas.Previously,
the viola was often taught
onviolins strung up with viola
strings. This is not
recommended as the true viola sound cannot be
achieved. Children are now starting on violarather than moving from the violin
and it isessential for
their progress that an authenticinstrument
is used. Stentor has developedsmaller size violas, down to 12" (300mm), tomeet this need, offering good tone and soundas well as correctly sized instruments. 1038'Stentor
